Nicole Shaver's Icelandic Blog

Greetings from Iceland!
Resident Artist of Studio 224, Nicole Shaver, here dispatching from the small Arctic country of Iceland! I am here in the fisherman village of Skagaströnd on the east coast bay of Húnaflói, home to Spákonufell Mountain and the Cap of Spákonufell. I am here on assignment as an artist-in-residence at NES Artist Residence, a cultural center that invites around 100 international artists a year to research their craft in provided studio and exhibition spaces. Please check out all the great work they are doing: https://neslist.is

Top photo: A view of the studio hosted in a repurposed fish factory. Spákonufell Mountain is pictured in the background.

Pictured above are artists at work in a communal studio space. The formal freezer is an exhibition space.

I will be in Skagaströnd working on paintings and drawings that speak to the transient nature of place in preparation for a solo exhibition next spring at the University of Wisconsin. I will also be gathering photos in order to document the memory of travel and the imagining of a new destination. Upon my return, I will be utilizing the photography and printmaking facilities at Studio 224 to print images, searching for a visual language to tell of the journey.

This is my third time venturing to the country of just over 300,000 people. In 2016 I visited Seyðisfjörður on a similar venture. Before I left Port Washington, I began printing films from that expedition in the photography facilities available at Studio 224. I am hoping to continue with this line of images upon my return.

…but in Iceland, you just go with the flow. Anything can happen!

Áfram Ísland!
Cheers,
Nicole
